Gray Mountain – John Grisham

Gray Mountain

“<<Yes, and you never get used to it. It’s an ongoing rape of the land, a new assault every day.>> The violence was slow, methodical, and efficient. After a few minutes, he said, <<In two years, they’ve knocked off eight hundred feet of the mountain. They’ve gone through four or five seams, with about that many left to strip. When it’s over, Enid Mountain will yield about three million tons of coal, at an avreage price of sixty bucks a ton. The math gets easy.>>” (p. 161)

„Her goal had been to make partner by the age of thrity-five, be one of the few women at the top, and nail down a corner office from which she would play hardball with the boys. She would have a secretary, an assistant, some paralegals, and a driver on call, a golden expense account, and a designer wardrobe. The hunderd-hour workweeks would shrink into something manageable. She would knok down two million plus a year for twenty years, then retire and travel the world. Along the way she would pick up a husban, a kid or two, and life would be grand. It all had been planned and was seemingly within reach.” (p. 21)

You are deliberately sucking me into a conspiracy that can land me in serious trouble. The FBI is all over this, yet you want me to get involved. You’re as reckless as your brother and you don’t care what happens to me. Look, who says I’m even going back to Brady, Virginia? I feel incredibly safe right now. This is my home; it’s where I belong.” (p. 384)

“She was really growing weary of all this death. […] Two days before, on Gray Mountain, Samantha had again seen the white cross marking the spot where Rose took her life. She had never met the Tate boys, but felt an attachment to their tragedy. She often thought of Mattie’s father and the way black lung killed him. Life could be harsh in the coalfileds, and at that moment she missed the rough streets of the big city.” (p. 455-456)
